The Rattlesnake "Safari" Bus is
parked behind the concert stage, which is located behind the rattlesnake
buying platform. G.W. Sheward takes paying patrons on a one hour safari
deep into rattlesnake country. Don't worry folks, usually everybody
finds their way back to town.
The safari travels approximately five
miles west of Mangum. Along the way, passengers have the opportunity to
see the native wildlife and plant life that encompasses Mangum.
Passengers have the opportunity to see deer, wild turkey, coyotes, and
quail. During the ride, Jack Cossey discusses the rattlesnake's natural
environment and history of Greer County.
The Safari will end its destination at an
actual rattlesnake den site. Here, the guides will place two
rattlesnakes, a male and female, into the grass so the passengers can
see what the rattlesnake looks like in its natural environment. The
guides will also discuss what to do when encountering the snake in the
wild. In addition, passengers will learn what kind of terrain
rattlesnakes like to call home. Before the bus heads back to town,
passengers will be able to "catch" one of the rattlesnakes.
The bus leaves at the top of the hour as
weather permits. Check the Schedule of Events for more information.
